Hericium erinaceus, an ideal culinary-medicinal mushroom, has become a well-established candidate in promoting positive brain and nerve health-related activities by inducing the nerve growth factor from its bioactive ingredient. Among its active compounds, only erinacine A has confirmed pharmacological actions in the central nervous system in rats. Hence, this review has summarized the available information on the neurohealth properties of H. erinaceus mycelia enriched with erinacines, which may contribute to further research on the therapeutic roles of these mycelia. The safety of this mushroom has also been discussed. Although it has been difficult to extrapolate the in vivo studies to clinical situations, preclinical studies have shown that there can be improvements in ischemic stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and depression if H. erinaceus mycelia enriched with erinacines are included in daily meals.

Potential Antidepressant Effects of Scutellaria baicalensis, Hericium erinaceus and Rhodiola rosea

Recent studies focused on the pharmacology and feasibility of herbal compounds as a potential strategy to target a variety of human diseases ranging from metabolic to brain disorders. Accordingly, bioactive ingredients which are found within a variety of herbal compounds are reported to produce both neuroprotective and psychotropic activities which may help to combat mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances and cognitive alterations. In the present manuscript, we focus on three herbs which appear effective in mitigating anxiety or depression with favourable risk-benefit profiles, namely Scutellaria baicalensis (S. baicalensis), Hericium erinaceus (H. erinaceus) and Rhodiola rosea (R. rosea). These three traditional folk medicinal herbs target the main biochemical events that are implicated in mental disorders, mimicking, to some extent, the mechanisms of action of conventional antidepressants and mood stabilizers with a wide margin of tolerability. In detail, they rescue alterations in neurotransmitter and neuro-endocrine systems, stimulate neurogenesis and the synthesis of neurotrophic factors, and they counteract oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and inflammation. Albeit the encouraging results that emerge from both experimental and clinical evidence, further studies are needed to confirm and better understand the mental-health promoting, and specifically, the antidepressant effects of these herbs.

Current Evidence of Ergogenic and Post-Exercise Recovery Effects of Dietary Supplementation with Cordyceps militaris in Humans—A Narrative Review

Cordyceps militarisis an entomopathogenic fungus traditionally used in Asian ethnomedicine and increasingly investigated for its potential health-promoting properties, including immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory activities. In recent years, it has gained attention as a dietary supplement with possible applications in sports nutrition. This narrative review summarizes and critically evaluates the current human evidence regarding the ergogenic and post-exercise recovery effects ofC. militarissupplementation in healthy individuals. A structured database search was conducted using predefined eligibility criteria, and the methodological quality of included studies was appraised through domain-based risk-of-bias assessment. Five intervention studies published between 2017 and 2024, comprising 321 participants aged 16–35 years, were identified. Supplementation protocols ranged from 1 to 16 weeks, with daily doses of 1–12 g administered either as isolated fungal material or as a part of multi-ingredient formulations. Assessed outcomes included indices of aerobic performance and exercise capacity, such as maximal or peak oxygen uptake (VO2max/VO2peak), time to exhaustion, power output, running performance, and maintenance of peripheral oxygen saturation during high-intensity exercise. Several studies also evaluated biochemical markers related to muscle damage and inflammatory responses, including creatine kinase, blood urea nitrogen, and white blood cell counts. Although some studies reported improvements in selected performance and recovery parameters, the findings were inconsistent. The certainty of the evidence is limited by small sample sizes, heterogeneity of participants and exercise protocols, insufficient reporting of randomization, lack of trial registration in most studies, absence of standardized preparations with quantified bioactive constituents, and the use of multi-ingredient supplements. Well-designed randomized controlled trials using chemically characterized preparations and homogeneous athletic populations are required to clarify the efficacy and practical relevance ofC. militarisin sports nutrition.

Edible and medicinal fungi, a group of eukaryotic organisms with numerous varieties, includingCoriolus versicolor,Ganoderma lucidum,Cordyceps sinensis,Pleurotus ostreatus, andGrifola frondosa, have been demonstrated to possess a board range of pharmaceutical properties, including anti-virus, anti-inflammation, and neuroprotection. Moreover, edible and medicinal fungi have been traditionally consumed as food to provide multiple nutrients and as drugs owing to having the activities of invigorating blood circulation, reinforcing the healthy qi, clearing away heat, and eliminating stasis for thousands of years in China. Malignant tumors, well-known as the second leading cause of death globally, accounted for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020. Thus, in-depth exploration of strategies to prevent and treat cancer is extremely urgent. A variety of studies have reported that the main bioactive components of edible and medicinal fungi, mainly polysaccharides and triterpenoids, exhibit diverse anticancer activities via multiple mechanisms, including inhibition of cell proliferation and metastasis, induction of apoptosis and autophagy, reversing multidrug resistance, and regulation of immune responses, thus suggesting their substantial potential in the prevention and treatment of cancer. Our review summarizes the research progress on the anticancer properties of edible and medicinal fungi and the underlying molecular mechanism, which may offer a better understanding of this field. Additionally, few studies have reported the safety and efficacy of extracts from edible and medicinal fungi, which may limit their clinical application. In summary, there is a need to continue to explore the use of those extracts and to further validate their safety and efficacy.

Modulation of T Regulatory and Dendritic Cell Phenotypes Following Ingestion of Bifidobacterium longum, AHCC® and Azithromycin in Healthy Individuals

The probiotic Bifidus BB536 (BB536), which containsBifidobacterium longum, has been shown to have enhanced probiotic effects when given together with a standardized extract of culturedLentinula edodesmycelia (AHCC®, Amino Up Co. Ltd., Sapporo, Japan). BB536 and AHCC®may modulate T cell and dendritic cell (DC) phenotypes, and cytokine profiles to favour anti-inflammatory responses following antibiotic ingestion. We tested the hypothesis that orally administered BB536 and/or AHCC®, results in modulation of immune effector cells with polarisation towards anti-inflammatory responses following antibiotic usage. Forty healthy male volunteers divided into 4 equal groups were randomised to receive either placebo, BB536, AHCC®or a combination for 12 days in a double-blind manner. After 7 days volunteers also received 250 mg azithromycin for 5 days. Cytokine profiles from purified CD3+ T cells stimulated with PDB-ionomycin were assessed. CD4+ CD25+ forkhead box P3 (Foxp3) expression and peripheral blood DC subsets were assessed prior to treatment and subsequently at 7 and 13 days. There was no difference in cytokine secretion from stimulated CD3+ T cells between treatment groups. Compared with baseline, Foxp3 expression (0.45 ± 0.1 vs. 1.3 ± 0.4;p= 0.002) and interferon-gamma/interleukin-4 (IFN-γ/IL-4) ratios were increased post-treatment in volunteers receiving BB536 (p= 0.031), although differences between groups were not significant. For volunteers receiving combination BB536 and AHCC®, there was an increase in myeloid dendritic cells (mDC) compared with plasmacytoid DC (pDC) counts (80% vs. 61%;p= 0.006) at post treatment time points. mDC2 phenotypes were more prevalent, compared with baseline, following combination treatment (0.16% vs. 0.05%;p= 0.002). Oral intake of AHCC®and BB536 may modulate T regulatory and DC phenotypes to favour anti-inflammatory responses following antibiotic usage.
