L-Theanine & Stress

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

Researchers studied L-theanine during an acute mental stress task and measured psychological and physiological stress responses.

L-theanine reduced several physiological stress responses compared with control conditions.

The study involved 12 participants completing repeated experimental sessions. L-theanine intake was associated with reduced heart-rate and salivary immunoglobulin A responses during the acute stress task. The authors suggested that the effects may involve reduced sympathetic nervous activation.

L-Theanine + Caffeine

RANDOMIZED CROSSOVER STUDY

A randomized crossover study compared caffeine alone with caffeine combined with L-theanine during cognitive tasks.

The combination improved speed and accuracy on an attention-switching task and reduced distraction susceptibility.

Twenty-seven healthy volunteers received 50 mg caffeine with or without 100 mg L-theanine. The combination improved both speed and accuracy on an attention-switching task at 60 minutes and reduced susceptibility to distracting information during a memory task.

SYSTEMATIC REVIEW & META-ANALYSIS

Researchers analyzed randomized controlled trials examining caffeine supplementation during strength training.

Caffeine improved bench-press muscle endurance and maximum strength in the analyzed studies.

Nineteen studies were included in the quantitative synthesis. Significant improvements were found for bench-press repetitions and maximum strength. The analysis did not find significant improvements for the assessed leg-press outcomes.

Caffeine & Cognitive Function

SYSTEMATIC REVIEW & META-ANALYSIS

Research has examined caffeine consumed before or during exercise for effects on cognitive performance.

The meta-analysis found significant effects on attention, accuracy and speed.

The review identified 13 studies, with five included in the meta-analysis. Significant pooled effects were observed for attention, accuracy and speed. Other outcomes such as reaction time, memory and fatigue varied according to the research protocol.

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

A four-week randomized placebo-controlled crossover trial examined L-theanine in healthy adults.

The study reported improvements in selected stress-related and cognitive measures.

Thirty healthy adults received 200 mg/day L-theanine or placebo for four weeks. The study reported improvements in selected stress-related symptoms, sleep-quality measures, verbal fluency and executive function.

Caffeine & Depression

OBSERVATIONAL META-ANALYSIS

A meta-analysis examined observational studies on coffee, caffeine consumption and depression risk.

Coffee and caffeine consumption were associated with a lower risk of depression.

The analysis included observational studies involving hundreds of thousands of participants. The authors reported an association between coffee or caffeine consumption and reduced depression risk. Because these were observational data, the findings do not establish that caffeine prevents or treats depression.

Chamomile

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

An exploratory analysis examined chamomile extract in adults with generalized anxiety disorder, including participants with comorbid depression.

The authors observed potential antidepressant effects in participants with comorbid depression.

The underlying trial involved 179 participants receiving 1500 mg/day chamomile extract for eight weeks. The authors observed greater reductions in selected depression measures among participants with comorbid depression, but described the observation as preliminary and called for further controlled trials.

Melatonin & Sleep Quality

SYSTEMATIC REVIEW & META-ANALYSIS

A meta-analysis evaluated randomized controlled trials of melatonin and sleep quality in adults.

Melatonin produced a significant improvement in measured sleep quality.

Twenty-three randomized controlled trials were included. The pooled analysis found a significant improvement in Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores, although substantial variation existed between studies.

Lavender & Sleep Quality

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED STUDY

A randomized controlled study examined lavender essential-oil inhalation in patients in a coronary intensive care setting.

Lavender was associated with improved sleep-quality scores and reduced anxiety scores.

Sixty coronary ICU patients participated. The intervention group received 2% lavender essential oil through inhalation for 15 days. Sleep quality and anxiety scores improved compared with the control group.

Melatonin & Postoperative Delirium

SYSTEMATIC REVIEW & META-ANALYSIS

A systematic review examined melatonin and melatonin-receptor agonists for prevention of postoperative delirium in older adults.

The meta-analysis found a reduced incidence of postoperative delirium in the included studies.

Six studies involving 1,155 participants were included in the meta-analysis. Delirium incidence was significantly lower in the intervention groups. The review also noted that optimal dosing remains unanswered.

Preclinical research has identified several potentially neuroactive mechanisms, including effects involving nerve growth factor.

Bacillus coagulans

RANDOMIZED CLINICAL TRIAL

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study evaluated B. coagulans LBSC in people with irritable bowel syndrome.

The studied strain improved several gastrointestinal symptoms compared with placebo.

The study included 40 participants. Bacillus coagulans LBSC DSM17654 was administered at 6 billion CFU per day for 80 days. Improvements were reported across several gastrointestinal symptoms. These findings are specific to the studied strain and dose.

Bromelain reduced postoperative pain and improved some quality-of-life outcomes in the analyzed studies.
